SANGWANI MUNTHALI - Vocalist | Composer | Songwriter | Guitarist
Sangwani Munthali is a Malawian gospel artist whose music is described as Advanced Afro-Contemporary (Adfroc) music which is a fusion of Afro-Jazz, Afro-Pop and African Traditional beats with more bias towards Afro-Jazz. He describes himself as a minister of the gospel through music. He was born on 18 January 1975. His passion for music started while he still young. As a young boy, whenever he knocked off from school, he used to imitate the then Malawian local bands (such as Makasu) with his friends. They used empty tins in place of drums.
In 1988, he met Mahara Mhango (formerly Gift Mhango) of the then Mhango Salvation Singers. It was during this time that his passion for music developed further. Chimwemwe Mhango, the brother to Mahara, noticed Sangwani’s music potential and took him as a backing vocalist. He was a backing vocalist for Chimwemwe Mhango (now Rev. Chimwemwe Mhango) until 2000.
